The Global First Aid Reference Centre is looking for a distance worker from any of the National Societies to conduct research on first aid challenges as part of a collaborative research project on heatwaves.

This research project is being carried out by the Red Cross Red Crescent Research Consortium (RC3) together with other reference centres in at least ten countries until 2023. It aims to better understand and address the danger of heatwaves, which are increasing in number due to climate change and are very deadly, especially in cities. Ultimately, the aim is to help strengthen humanitarian preparedness for heatwaves in cities, build community resilience and transform the way National Societies deal with heatwaves.

The distance worker will represent the Centre in the group. He/she will contribute to the establishment of a global baseline of heatwave impacts, understand the implications for populations, define locally applicable thresholds for determining when extreme heat becomes dangerous, consider actions to prevent the human consequences of heatwaves, and explore shelter and infrastructure considerations for mitigating heat-related risks.

This is a unique opportunity for the distance worker to contribute to the Movement’s ambitions to address the climate crisis, the IFRC Strategy 2030, the IFRC plan and budget for 2021-2025 and the ICRC Strategy 2019-2022.

The GFARC will offer a unique access to its resources and contacts to enable the worker to work in the best conditions. A monthly virtual conference will be organized by the GFARC to monitor progress and provide equipment if necessary. We are committed to provide prompt feedback on the work done. The research project involves the formation of working groups. All reference centers will meet twice a year to review progress and discuss synergies.

We are looking for someone with research background and fluency in English. The collaborator should also be familiar with our first aid guidelines and the RCRC Movement, have data management skills, be able to conduct comparative studies, facilitate small group workshops, have writing and reporting skills, be able to conduct software-based surveys and have knowledge of the evidence-based process.

We invite National Societies to nominate one of their members with a CV and a letter of motivation. The candidate may be asked to attend a motivation interview and then complete a written questionnaire to assess his/her knowledge of the mission.
