Translation Volunteers
Our volunteers help in translation and proof-reading mainly in Arabic, French, English and Spanish
The Global First Aid Reference Centre relies a lot on volunteers to translate and proofread our documents, as they are disseminated to 192 National Societies in different languages. We work with volunteers who have all kinds of great skills and many can use their experience at GFARC in their jobs. Whether you are interested in translating medical texts or translating for crisis response, there are engaging projects available to suit all preferences.

Who are we looking for?
Translation Volunteers:
By volunteering to help with translation you will play a very important role in the centre, while at the same time learning about our work. The translated documents will help the 192 National Societies to improve their first aid practices, to integrate the latest international recommendations and thus enable as many people as possible to save lives and take care of injured people effectively until help arrives. The documentation that requires translation is for the benefit of all Nationals Societies and their staff and volunteers. Its size may vary depending on the topics covered, ranging from one to 30 pages. Throughout the mission, the staff of the centre is available for any questions the translation volunteers may have to support them in carrying out their mission (lexicons, explanation, proofreading, etc.). We need translation into English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian and Mandarin…
Proofreading Volunteers:
Some documents are very often translated by several non-professional people, the proofreader is therefore in charge of linguistic harmonization and the correction of grammatical or spelling errors. If you have a background in editing, or you love grammar, you can support the GFARC by reviewing and lightly editing our documents.
The proofreader works in one or more languages, in particular in English, French, Arabic, Spanish, which are the 4 official languages of communication (possibility of having some files in Russian or Mandarin also).
The types of translation or proof reading are varied and the volunteers receive personalised advice accordingly. Below are some examples:
– Technical documents (medical, scientific …) – international first aid recommendations
– Educational documents, training – international training of trainers of trainers for example
– Institutional documents – International first aid policy
– Promotional and communication documents, GFARC resources
– Reports, strategic document, research
Which skills do we need ?
- We are looking for applicants who are proficient in one or more languages and in different directions, in particular in English, French, Arabic, Spanish, which are the 4 official languages of communication with a written level B2 minimum (possibility of having some files in Russian or Mandarin also).
- Detail-oriented with good writing skills
- Sense of responsibility and ability to take initiative
- Able to commit at least 2 to 7 hours per month for a minimum of 6 months, though one year is preferable
- Responsive and proactively communicative via email
- Comfortable with new technology
- Able to access a desktop or laptop computer and internet
