The Global First Aid Reference Centre is pleased to provide all Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies with a condensed guide of the funding opportunities available to support their first aid projects.

RedPreneur

About the fund: RedPreneur is a two-year social entrepreneurship program created by the Austrian Red Cross which encourages the development of ventures with a high social impact in East and South East Europe and the South Caucasus. The program is supported by funding from the Austrian Development Cooperation.

RedPreneur doesn’t only offer funding opportunities, it allows National Societies’ staff and volunteers to participate in an immersive learning experience. Workshops and thematic webinars are regularly organized to bring together the actors of social innovation.

For whom: This program is intended for the staff and volunteers of the RCRC Movement with venture ideas or interested in developing their business skills. The program targets participants who work in or are willing to scale their activities in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus.

The National Society Investment Alliance

About the fund: The National Society Investment Alliance (NSIA) is a fund jointly administered by the IFRC and the ICRC. The objectives of the fund are to provide multi-year financial support for the long-term development of National Societies of the Movement. There are two types of funding:

1) The NSIA Accelerator: a grant (up to 1 million CHF) with a 3–5-year plan to support the organizational development and sustainability of the National Societies.

2) Bridge awards: These grants (up to CHF 50,000) are awarded to help National Societies to develop a plan for the NSIA Accelerator.

For whom: This fund is primarily intended for National Societies operating in a context of increased humanitarian crisis and/or risk. The INFORM index serves as the basis for the fund to determine which crisis contexts are considered medium-risk, high-risk or very high-risk.

Application information:

To learn more about selection criterias and application modalities, the NSIA provides National Societies with the 2022 “Guideline for applicants”. Please note that a 2023 edition of the “Guidelines for applicants” will be following for next year’s applications.

The IFRC’s Capacity Building Fund 

About the fund: The IFRC’s Capacity Building Fund (CBF) was established in 2000. It is currently managed by the IFRC’s Under Secretary General for National Society Development and Operations Coordination. Initially designed to support the ongoing development of National Societies, the objectives of the fund have since 2020 followed those of the IFRC’s Strategy 2030. Thus, the fund now aims to respond to four specific development priorities:

  • Integrity, transparency and accountability
  • Financial sustainability
  • Youth and volunteering development
  • Systems development and digital transformation

For whom: all National Societies are invited to apply

Application information:  A specific corner of the FedNet provide National Societies with many relevant resources about applications to the CBF. After the opening of the applications, National Societies can submit their funding proposal at any time using the online form accessible. When landing on the application form, you can choose the relevant language from the drop-down menu on the top right side.  Only applications submitted through this online form will be considered.

The Empress Shoken Fund

About the fund: The Empress Shoken Fund is jointly managed by the IFRC and the ICRC. The fund was created in 1912 by the Empress of Japan to financially support the activities of the Movement worldwide. Its moto: “‘Helping National Societies respond today, plan for tomorrow”. For more than a century and thanks to the support of the Japanese government, royal family and the Japanese Red Cross, the fund supports a large variety of initiatives each year. The fund intends to target projects that meet two fundamental objectives: capacity building of National Societies and organizational development.

For whom: all National Societies are invited to apply

Application information:  Please keep your National Society informed on the website page of the fund to learn more about the upcoming 2023 application dates. The 2022 grants have already been awarded as the fund regulations stipulate that a Joint Commission – composed of members of the IFRC and the ICRC – announces its grant decisions once a year on 11 April after a thorough review of the applications received.
