From May 7 to 22, 2022, a first aid training of trainers of trainers (ToT) mission and an initial and continuous training of trainers took place in Moroni, Comoros. This mission was made possible by a partnership between the GFARC, the Comorian Red Crescent and the PIROI, the Regional Intervention Platform of the Indian Ocean of the French Red Cross. This project is part of a larger program initiated by PIROI to strengthen the operational capacities of local actors in the Indian Ocean in terms of disaster risk management.

Prior to the mission, a first aid assessment was conducted in Comoros in September 2021, following which numerous needs were identified. Although the Comorian Red Crescent (CRc) has trainers, first aid still needs to be further developed in the archipelago.

During two weeks, Jean-Pierre Godo and Tina Feron, two French Red Cross and GFARC volunteers, conducted 4 training sessions for a total of 36 participants coming from 3 islands of the Comoros archipelago.

This mission allowed the team to implement the updated techniques and educational content of the first aid trainings in accordance with the new 2020 IFRC International first aid, education and resuscitation guidelines. In addition, the trained participants are now able to implement first aid trainers’ courses and first aid training, to lead first aid initiations and to supervise first aid activities and trainers’ teams within the Comoros archipelago.

Material support was also provided, including baby training mannequins, booklets and defibrillators.

The GFARC is pleased with the progress permitted by the mission for the development of first aid in Comoros. We express our warmest thanks to Jean-Pierre Godo and Tina Feron who made this mission a success.
